Symposium: Soil Sterilization Trials in Two Forest Nurseries

C. Bassett and G.M. Will

Trials carried out in the Kauaeranga and Forest Research Institute nurseries showed that soil sterilization with methyl bromide-chloro-picrin mixture (33% chloropicrin), by means of tractor-mounted equipment, was superior to any of the other five treatments used (ethylene dibromide, chloropicrin, Vapam, Mylone, and methyl bromide). This mixture gave the greatest disease control, the best weed control, and the largest seedlings. Ethylene dibromide was the least effective treatment. The incidence of mycorrhizae was reduced by some treatments but not eliminated by any.
